The Accident - Tue, Nov 6, 2007

So, how did it happen?

8:30 pm, working too late. Carl jumped on his motorcycle to ride home, in the dark, in the rain. On the freeway, traveling over 100 Km/hr, Carl quickly came up on a truck with no lights in the back. He braked too fast, the bike slid and went down. Carl and the bike slide for 50 meters or more on the slick pavement. With the bike in front of him, sparks were flying; he was afraid the bike and gasoline might catch fire. At the same time he was worrying about the truck behind him, hoping not to get hit by him--one advantage to lots of sparks, I guess. Trying to stop himself, he scraped up his right leg and hand. He and his bike stopped right in the middle of the traffic lane. He got up to try to lift bike up out of traffic, hopefully before the truck behind hit him and the bike, but he couldn't lift it. Thinking clearly, when he realized he couldn't get the bike out of the way, he stood in front of it to try to flag down the truck--he said he didn't want the truck to run over his bike.

Here's a picture of Carl's hand. Warning, it's gruesome. Don't click this unless you're ready... Here's the pic. The picture is after it was cleaned up at the hospital, but before the doctor cut off parts of his skin that were just hanging there... Taken by Carl with his cellphone.
